The Federal Government has approved the disbursement of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) intervention funds to 271 public tertiary institutions across the country in the 2026 intervention cycle.
The Executive Secretary of TETFund, Mr. Sunny Echono, announced this in Abuja, stating that each university will receive ₦2.5 billion, while polytechnics and colleges of education will get ₦1.8 billion and ₦2.05 billion respectively.
Echono explained that the 2026 intervention will introduce the Nigerian Research and Education Network (NgREN), an initiative designed to enhance global research collaboration and improve access to international academic resources for Nigerian institutions.
He added that the Fund is placing strong emphasis on emerging technologies, with plans to establish specialised centres for Robotics, Coding, Artificial Intelligence, and Cybersecurity in selected institutions nationwide.
The TETFund boss cautioned vice-chancellors, rectors, and provosts against delays in project execution, urging them to fully adopt the Tertiary Education Research Applications System (TERAS) to ensure efficiency and transparency in project management.
According to Echono, future funding interventions will prioritise the completion of abandoned projects, the upgrade of campus security infrastructure, and the expansion of student accommodation through public-private partnership arrangements.
He further disclosed that agricultural education and productivity will receive significant attention, with the establishment of commercial farms and demonstration laboratories to strengthen practical training and research.
Echono commended the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) for its effective tax collection efforts, noting that sustained revenue inflows remain critical to funding educational development and infrastructure across Nigeria’s tertiary institutions.
