Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has called on the Ogoni people to strengthen unity and work collectively towards achieving their shared aspirations as they mark the 2026 Ogoni Day.
January 4 is annually observed as Ogoni Day, a significant event that commemorates the history, struggle, and resilience of the Ogoni nation.
In a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Sunday and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Information and Communications, Dr Honour Sirawoo, the governor emphasized the importance of unity among Ogoni leaders and stakeholders.
Governor Fubara paid tribute to the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), describing it as a trailblazing organisation whose peaceful struggle drew global attention to environmental justice, equity, and human rights issues in Ogoniland and the wider Niger Delta region.
He stressed that disunity and internal divisions within MOSOP and the broader Ogoni community must be avoided, noting that unity of purpose is essential to advancing the collective interests of the people.
According to the governor, the call for unity is particularly crucial at a time when the Federal Government has demonstrated commitment through ongoing dialogue processes aimed at addressing past injustices and unresolved challenges in the area.
Governor Fubara also highlighted the sacrifices and courage of the Ogoni people, describing them as a defining chapter in Nigeria’s socio-political and democratic history. He said Ogoni Day serves as an opportunity for reflection and a renewed commitment to the ideals that have sustained the Ogoni struggle over the decades.
Describing the annual event as a powerful symbol of resilience, identity, and historic struggle, the governor reaffirmed his administration’s support for a united MOSOP and a united Ogoni people.
He assured that the Rivers State Government remains committed to supporting genuine efforts that promote peace, dialogue, reconciliation, and sustainable development in Ogoniland and across the state.
