The Executive Chairman of Degema Local Government Area, Hon. Michael John Williams, has tasked the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, on prompt response to issues of natural disaster, in order to actualize the objectives of the agency.
Speaking at a one-day Awareness/Sensitization Campaign, organized by the Rivers State Ministry of Health in Ahoada East Council Secretariat, Wednesday, the DELGA Sheriff, represented by his Chief of Staff, Hon. Ipalibo Yellowe, charged the agency to be more proactive and efficient, decrying a situation where yam seedlings, sent to the LGA for planting, in an effort to support flood victims, were rotten and useless.
He added that beyond the bad state of the yam seedlings that were sent to the LGA, they arrived very late, when it had long passed the planting season, making it an effort in futility.
The Chief of Staff thanked the Rivers State Government for constituting the State flood response committee and for doing everything possible to ensure that the impact of the floods were minimal on the citizenry.
While also commending the Ministry of Health for organizing the sensitization campaign, he assured that the administration of Hon. Michael John Williams would continue to take proactive measures to ensure the safety of lives and property, particularly in the flood-prone areas of the LGA.
The flood awareness/sensitization campaign, tagged: Flood Is A Hazard. Early Preparation Leads To Less Mortality & Morbidity, was attended by chief executives of LGAs and other stakeholders, including; officials from the health sector, personnel of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Nigerian Road Safety Corps (FRSC), National Orientation Agency (NOA), Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet), National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Nigerian Red Cross (NRC), traditional rulers, amongst others.
