Amnesty International has revealed that at least 1,844 people lost their lives to violence in Nigeria’s South-East between January 2021 and June 2023.
In its latest report, the rights organisation said the region has been plagued by abductions, mob attacks, electoral violence, and frequent assaults by armed groups, with the unrest persisting beyond the review period.
Amnesty described the security situation as a blend of political and criminal violence, allegedly exploited by both state and non-state actors.
The group further cautioned against attributing all attacks to the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), stressing that many incidents were carried out by other armed groups widely referred to as “unknown gunmen.”
