The Enugu State Police Command has confirmed that 10 people died and 10 others sustained injuries in two separate accidents along the Ozalla/Four-Corner axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway on Wednesday.
Police spokesman, SP Daniel Ndukwe, who disclosed this in a statement, described the incidents as “unfortunate” and conveyed the condolences of the command to the victims’ families.
According to Ndukwe, the first crash occurred at about 9 a.m. when a Howo truck loaded with bags of cement and heading to Abuja from Aba collided with a Toyota Corolla while attempting to overtake another truck. A Foton bus and a Daihatsu Hijet mini-bus, both driving one-way, were also caught in the collision.
“The truck head and the Toyota Corolla went up in flames, killing five occupants of the car. A passenger in the mini-bus also died, while several others sustained injuries,” he said.
The second crash occurred around 3 p.m. when a Sino truck laden with cement and driving one-way from Garriki, Enugu, rammed into a tricycle. Four occupants of the tricycle were rushed to hospital but were later confirmed dead.
